The best thing about the ride is the volunteers who make it go -- we just couldn’t do it without them.

Please note that we have ZERO volunteer slots for people who just act as riding marshals. ALL of our volunteers perform another vital task AND act as a riding marshal on ride day.

If you would like to join us, and do the ride for FREE, please send an email to volunteers@northforkcentury.com.  Be SURE to tell us the following information:

  1. Your name, email, and phone number.

  2. Where you want to start your North Fork day (Manhattan or Greenport).  NOTE: If you select Greenport, you MUST be able to get there on your own early in the morning OR come out the day before with us, pedal the route, and camp out overnight.

  3. Where do you want to be at the end of the day -- Manhattan or Greenport?

  4. How far do you want to pedal on ride day? (0 miles, 25 miles, 50 miles, 72 miles, or 100 miles).

  5. Do you feel comfortable driving a van or SMALL truck?  Do you feel comfortable driving a larger truck -- (big yellow Penske).  You don’t need a special driver’s license, a credit card, or insurance.  You DO need a regular U.S. driver’s license (which we need to see) and you must be at least 21 years old.

  6. We are always looking for drivers who do not pedal on ride day. Get your sweetie/mother-in-law/friend to volunteer to drive, and you pedal for free!  OR... if you take a volunteer driving job for North Fork where you don’t get to pedal at all, you can do our Ride to Montauk, Bike the River Valley, Farm Ride, or Bike the Night ride for free, AND get a free racing jersey!  (NOTE: If you pick the free farm ride it includes transportation and registration only -- you still have to pay for your own lodging if you wish to stay overnight.  We’re generous, but we’re not insane.)

We will not assign you to ANY volunteer slot without running it by you first to see if it’s OK with you.

NOTE: ALL volunteers pay for the ride in full in advance. After the ride we will refund you your entire ride fee AND your on-line registration fees, so the ride costs you nothing.  You will also get a free North Fork Staff T-shirt, and free North Fork racing socks.  We do NOT reimburse for any other clothing items you may choose to buy, or for any Express Lane VIP services you buy.

If we get a bad weather day (shh!) and you decide AFTER your volunteer shift that you’d rather just head home instead of riding, that’s fine -- you still get your volunteer refund.  But if you don’t show up, or mysteriously vanish during your shift, we can not refund your ride fee  OK?  OK!

We also offer optional rain insurance.  You pay $18 and if it rains 1” or more on ride day your ride fee refunded AND you get a check for $150.  Yes, even though you’re pedaling for free.  Note that if you choose to buy this optional insurance we can not reimburse you for that.

Ouch!

We have all been through tough financial stretches at one time or another, and we will never turn down anyone for this ride just because cash is temporarily tight. We will find a volunteer job for you, even if we have to create one!

BUT...

  1. You will have to help out and contribute your talent to the ride in some way. Every once in awhile we hear from a rider who says, “I’m broke and I want to ride for free, but I don’t want to volunteer.”

  1. No.

  1. Only a very few people who volunteer get to pedal the 100-mile route (it’s hard to find time to volunteer on ride day if you’re pedaling 10 hours!)

  2. We plan this ride far, FAR in advance. If you get in touch right before the ride it may be impossible to find a spot for you, no matter how deserving you may be.
